These sour cream cookies were one of the many that my Grandma would make every Christmas. I tend to focus on those frosted mouthfuls of cut out cookies, but you can make these into cut out cookies too. Sprinkle them with colored sugar before you bake them and the sugar colors bleed into the cookies. They are a wonderful treat to leave out for Santa and all the kids.
-3/4 cup sifted flour (you can do this with a wire strainer and a spoon if you don't have a flour sifter)
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-1/2 cup butter
-1 cup sugar
-1 egg
-1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
-1/2 cup sour cream
Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt into a bowl. In a separate large mixing bowl, combine the butter, sugar, egg and vanilla. Mix this with a blender for 2 minutes. Blend in the sour cream and 1/2 of the flour mixture--blend for about a minute. Add the remaining flour and mix by hand. Divide the dough in half for easier rolling. Use powder sugar to dust your work surface and rolling pin so the dough doesn't stick. Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick, and cut with cookie cutters. Place on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with colored sugar and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
